Where’s the Meat?

Meatless Mondays were a huge bust in our house. My husband moved the food around on his plate and asked, where’s the meat? After dinner he proceeded to grab a bag of potato chips because he was still hungry. Not exactly what I was going for. But anyone who knows me, knows I’m pretty hard headed. So, I set out in search for more filling meatless meals and again the same scene played out. I knew then we wouldn’t be going vegetarian and certainly not vegan! I started researching all about the meat we eat. How does what they eat and how they are raised affect our bodies?

My husband enjoys a good steak so I started with beef. What I learned is that nothing good happened when cattle started being fed grain back in the 1950’s. The composition of their bodies changed to be higher in Omega 6’s and in turn we consumed more of these inflammatory fats.1 Interestingly enough, I came across an article in a mainstream magazine where the author, a dietitian, said the nutrition profile of 100% grass fed beef is similar to that of salmon. Let that sink in for a minute. But wait, there’s more! It goes beyond Omega-3’s. There is recent research showing there is increased concentration of phytochemicals available in 100% Grass Fed beef. These phytochemicals are available to assist our bodies in decreasing inflammation and oxidative stress. 2

Not only is it better for our bodies, but its also believed to be ecologically advantageous. Grass fed cows actually give back to our ecosystem. Rather than striping the land of it’s nutrients it provides needed nutrients back to the soil, this farming technique is often referred to as regenerative agriculture. 3, 2

We have chosen to continue eating beef, but we seek out 100% Grass fed and humanely raised when ever we can. Packaging is sneaky, “Natural”, “Grass Fed” and “Organic” does not equal 100% Grass fed. It has to say the words “100% Grass Fed.”

If you are interested in a having 100% Grass Fed and humanely raised meat shipped to your house, check out the box company we have been using for 3.5 years.
